Using Air Purifiers to Help Relieve Asthma and Allergy Symptoms
Air purifiers are becoming more and more popular as people look for ways to alleviate some of the many sources of irritation for chronic allergy and asthma sufferers. Asthma and allergies affect more than 50 million Americans. Recognizing that an improvement in air quality can play an important role in reducing the symptoms of these two common problems, many people are turning to air purification systems to help provide relief. Allergens and irritants like smoke, mold, bacteria, pet dander and other pollutants can irritate your respiratory system and tax your immune system which increases discomfort for asthma and allergy sufferers. Filtering these irritants from the indoor air in the home can provide much-needed relief for people.
Three Main Air Purifiers
Air purifiers come in three main styles. They typically use filters, electrical attraction or ozone to remove irritating particles from the air. Filter type systems use fine sieves to trap particles that pass through the filter. The type and quality of the filter determine how many and what types of particles are trapped. HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters are guaranteed to trap 99.97% of airborne particles larger than 0.3 microns. Some purifiers use electrical attraction to trap airborne particles. Although this is an effective method for trapping these particles, some types of electrical attraction purifiers emit ozone as a by-product of the process. Studies conducted have shown that ozone can aggravate the symptoms of allergies and asthmas sufferers. Other types of air filtering system use ozone generators. Like some electrical attraction purifiers, these systems also release ozone into the air, making them unsuitable for people who suffer from allergies or asthma. Using an air purifier at home as part of an overall strategy to reduce indoor air pollutants can go a long way to relieving asthma and allergy symptoms.
